Yùnwén 蘊聞
Southern-Sòng Yángqí-branch Línjì Chán master, dharma-heir of 宗杲 Dàhuì Zōnggǎo (1089–1163). Also styled Pǔcí Wén 普慈聞 and Xuěfēng Yùnwén 雪峯蘊聞 after his principal abbacies. Lay surname Shěn 沈; native of Hóngzhōu 洪州 (Jiāngxī). Exact lifedates not transmitted. Initial abbacy at Huáiyù 懷玉 in Xìnzhōu 信州; subsequently at Yōuyán 幽巖 in Fúzhōu and Xuěfēng Chóngshèng 雪峯崇聖 also in Fúzhōu. During the Qiándào 乾道 period (1165–1173) he was summoned by imperial decree to Shuāngjìng 雙徑 (i.e. Jìngshān 徑山) in Línjn — his teacher’s former seat — and bestowed the title Huìrì chánshī 慧日禪師. Late in life returned to Xuěfēng.
His editorial achievement — and the act that secured his place in the tradition — was the compilation of the thirty-juan Dàhuì Pǔjué chánshī yǔlù 大慧普覺禪師語錄 (KR6q0060), the definitive recorded-sayings collection of his teacher Zōnggǎo. Yùnwén signed and submitted the text to the throne in his opening memorial from the Jìngshān Néngrén Chányuàn 徑山能仁禪院 on an unspecified day of Qiándào 7.3 (March/April 1171), with printing by Dé Qián 德潛 of the Dōngchán Bào’ēn Guāngxiào Chán sì 東禪報恩光孝禪寺 in Fúzhōu and insertion into the Pílú canon completed in Qiándào 8.1 (January/February 1172).
