Yú Fān 虞翻
Zì Zhòngxiáng 仲翔. Native of Yúyáo 餘姚 in Kuàijī 會稽 (modern Zhèjiāng). Late-Hàn / Wú-state official and the single most influential exponent of the Hàn-period xiàngshù 象數 (“image-and-number”) Yì hermeneutic — characterised by huà tǐ 化體 (line-mutation), páng tōng 旁通 (lateral-trigram permutation), zhī bǐ guà 之卦 (hexagram-transformation), and nà jiǎ 納甲 (sexagenary-cycle correlation). Served the Sūn 孫 court of Wú; banished to Jiāozhōu 交州 (modern northern Vietnam) after offending Sūn Quán 孫權, and is said to have continued teaching the Yì there until his death.
His Yì commentary is lost as an independent work but survives in extensive citation in 李鼎祚 Lǐ Dǐngzuò’s Zhōuyì jíjiě 周易集解 (KR1a0008) — the largest single block of Hàn-style xiàngshù material in the received tradition. Reconstructed in the Qīng by 張惠言 Zhāng Huìyán in his Yú shì Yì 虞氏易 (1808 preface), which became the standard scholar’s text for Wú-school Hàn Yì. Sānguó zhì · Wúzhì (juan 57) carries his biography.
