Yuán Juè 袁桷 (1266–1327), zì Bózhǎng 伯長, hào Qīngróng jūshì 清容居士, posthumous title Wénqīng 文清, native of Qìngyuánlù 慶元路 (modern Níngbō 寧波, Zhèjiāng). One of the most important literary figures of the late Yuán court establishment. Great-grandson of the Southern Sòng zhī Shūmìyuàn shì (Vice State Councillor for Military Affairs) Yuán Sháo 袁韶 — the family was one of the principal “old households of inheritance of the southeast” (dōngnán gùjiā yíxiàn 東南故家遺獻).
In youth he served as shānzhǎng (head) of the Lìzé shūyuàn 麗澤書院 in Wúzhōu 婺州 (modern Jīnhuá 金華), the academy founded in honour of Lǚ Zǔqiān 呂祖謙. On recommendation he transferred to the Hànlín Guóshǐyuàn 翰林國史院 as jiǎnyuèguān 檢閱官, rising by promotions to Hànlín shìjiǎng xuéshì 翰林侍講學士. He retired and was posthumously appointed cānzhī zhèngshì 參知政事 of the JiāngZhè xíngshěng and enfeoffed Chénliújùngōng 陳留郡公.
His extant works include the substantial literary collection Qīngróng jūshì jí 清容居士集 in fifty juan (KR4d0473 in the Sìkù; SBCK base preserves complete text), and the Yánjiā Sìmíng zhì (KR2k0025) compiled in 1320 at the request of zǒngguǎn Mǎ Zé. His Yìshuō 易説 and Chūnqiūshuō 春秋説, recorded in Sū Tiānjué’s 蘇天爵 mùzhìmíng (epitaph) for him, are no longer extant. His Yuán shǐ biography appears at Yuán shǐ j. 172. CBDB: 10389 (lifedates 1266–1327).
