The author of the Zhēnguān gōngsī huàshǐ 貞觀公私畫史 (KR3h0004) — the foundational Tang inventory of paintings in imperial-and-private collections — composed at the request of Hànwáng Lǐ Yuánchāng 漢王李元昌 in Zhēnguān 13 (639). Per the Sìkù 提要, Péi Xiàoyuán also composed a separate Huàpǐn lù (lost; cited by Zhāng Yànyuǎn’s KR3h0009 Lìdài mínghuà jì) in the systematic-criticism style of KR3h0001 Gǔhuà pǐnlù.
