Chǔ Rénhuò 褚人獲 (courtesy names 學稼 Xuéjià and 石農 Shínóng; pseudonym 稻田漁叟 Dàotián Yúsǒu; b. Chóngzhēn 8 = 1635, Chángshu 常熟, Jiāngsū; death date unknown) was a Qīng prose writer, miscellaneist, and novelist. CBDB (id 90922) gives his birth year as 1635 and notes that the death year is not recorded; Wilkinson places his floruit ca. 1675–1695 (Chinese History: A New Manual, §32.8.2, which cites his Jiānhú Jí 堅瓠集 for market-place slang). He does not appear to have held official office; his career was that of a private literatus and writer in the Jiāngnán cultural milieu of the early-to-mid Kāngxī reign.
His most significant works are: (1) Jiānhú Jí 堅瓠集, a large collection of miscellaneous notes in multiple series, valued by later scholars for its documentation of vernacular vocabulary, popular customs, and anecdotal material of the early Qīng; and (2) Suí Táng Yǎnyì 隋唐演義 (KR4k0233), a 100-chapter historical novel about the transition from the Suí to the Táng dynasty, composed in the 1670s and first printed in 1695. The novel draws on earlier sources including the Suíyáng Dì Yànshǐ 隋煬帝豔史 and chuánqí tale traditions and became one of the standard entries in the roster of Chinese historical romance fiction (Wilkinson, Table 82).
