Xióng Sānbá 熊三拔 — Italian Jesuit Sabatino de Ursis (1575–1620) — was an Italian Jesuit missionary in late-Míng China, junior collaborator of Matteo Ricci. The catalog form Xīyáng Xióng Sānbá 西洋熊三拔 (“the Westerner Xióng Sānbá”) preserves the Late-Míng convention for naming European missionaries with their Sinicised names plus the Xīyáng (“Western Sea = Europe”) modifier. Major collaborative works: with Xú Guāngqǐ, the Tàixī shuǐ fǎ 泰西水法 (KR3d0008, 1612 — translation/adaptation of European hydraulic-engineering and irrigation knowledge); with the Calendar Bureau astronomers, the Biǎo dù shuō 表度說 (1614, treatise on gnomon-based solar measurement). Worked extensively on Chinese calendrical reform from 1610 onward. CBDB id 132256.
