Shin’en 親圓 — Mid-Heian Japanese Kegon 華嚴 (Avataṃsaka-school) monk of Tōdaiji 東大寺. His sole canonical work, Huā-yán-zōng zhǒng-xìng yì chāo 華嚴宗種性義抄 (KR6t0024, T72n2328), is precisely dated by its colophon to Kannin 3 (= 1019), 2nd month, 7th day, at the Tōdaiji North Hall West Second Subordinate-Officials Room (東大寺北室西第二小吏房). The work is a Kegon-school compendium on the doctrine of gotra (inherent seed-natures) treated through the five-fold Kegon teaching-classification — an exemplary product of the Tōdaiji Kegon scholarly tradition at the height of the Fujiwara regency.
