Juéài 覺愛 (“Awakened-Love”, Chinese rendering of the Sanskrit Buddhapālita), Kashmīrī (Běi tiānzhú 北天竺 “North Indian”) monk active in Táng China from the mid-670s. Chinese name Fóduópōlì 佛陀波利 (transliteration). Best known in the Chinese canonical tradition as the translator of the Fódǐng zūn-shèng tuó-luó-ní jīng 佛頂尊勝陀羅尼經 (Uṣṇīṣavijayā dhāraṇī sūtra, T19 n967, dated 676–684 after a journey back to India to fetch a Sanskrit copy, at imperial command of the Táng emperor Gāozōng).
Also delivered an orally-translated Chán teaching-session at the Chán-lín sì 禪林寺 in the Western Capital (Chāng’ān) in Yí-fèng 2 (677), recorded by the Chinese monk Míngxún 明恂 and mediated linguistically by the co-resident Indian monk Huìzhì 慧智; this session survives as the Xiū chán yào jué 修禪要訣 (KR6q0116, X63 n1222). The text is editorially distinct from Buddhapālita’s Dhāraṇī-translation work and represents direct Indo-Chinese Chán transmission.
