Guān-yīn 觀音 / Guān-shì-yīn 觀世音 — the Chinese name for the Mahāyāna bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, “Lord Who Perceives the World’s Sounds.” The cardinal Buddhist Mahā-bodhisattva of compassion, expounded principally in the Saddharma-puṇḍarīka-sūtra ch. 25 (Pǔ mén pǐn, the Universal-Gate chapter on the Bodhisattva’s Boundless Compassion), with cult-recipient since at least the third century CE in China. From the Sòng onward, Guān-yīn was progressively absorbed into the Daoist pantheon under Daoist epithets such as Cí háng dào rén 慈航道人 (“Master Compassion-Ferry”) and Yuán tōng zì zài 圓通自在 (“Penetrating-Awakening Sovereign”), and by the late Míng / Qīng was a fully participant figure in Daoist fú-jī 扶乩 spirit-writing communities. The figure delivers the Lián chuán jīng in KR5i0025 under the planchette persona Guān-yīn dà shì, in a programmatic Buddhist-Daoist syncretist register.
