Nèyīn Jūshì 訥音居士 (Gentleman of Inarticulate Sound) is the pseudonym of the unidentified author of Sān Xù Jīnpíngméi 三續金瓶梅 (KR4k0217), a 40-chapter Qīng sequel to Jīnpíngméi 金瓶梅. In the novel’s preface, the author identifies himself as a military man (武夫) who enjoys studying literary theory, which, if genuine, points to a background in the Qīng military establishment (possibly a bannerman or military officer) rather than in examination-culture literati circles. The copying-out notice in the text is dated Dàoguāng 1 / 1821 (道光元年), establishing a terminus ante quem for the composition. The pseudonym Nèyīn Jūshì is otherwise unattested and has not been linked to any known historical person.
