Qīng-dynasty classical philologist, bibliophile, calligrapher, and provincial administrator from Hǎiníng 海寧 (Hǎichāng 海昌) in Zhèjiāng. Original given name 映漣 Yìnglián, courtesy name 叔夏 Shūxià; hào 珊林 Shānlín and 樂恬散人 Lètián sǎnrén; studio name 紅竹草堂 Hóngzhú cǎotáng. Jǔrén in Jiāqìng 24 / 1820, jìnshì (2nd-grade èrjiǎ 二甲) in Dàoguāng 13 / 1833. Served successively as a magistrate in Zhílì, prefect of Píngdù 平度 in Shāndōng (where in seven years he adjudicated over 13,600 pending and current cases, overturning many wrongful verdicts), and as administrator at Zhènjiāng during a major flood, where he personally led relief boats. Known for sharp judgment and active relief work.
Scholarly output dominated by character-study: 《說文解字疏箋》 (lost), 《識字略》, 《古韻閣文》, 《古韻閣詩》, 《讀說文記》 (in 《古韻閣遺著》), 《洗冤錄詳義》 with 《摭遺》 and 《補》. Edited 《六朝文絜》, an enduringly influential anthology of Six Dynasties parallel prose. The catalogue of his works also lists 《外科正宗》 and 《咽喉脈證通論》 (KR3em029), but Xǔ presents himself in his own preface to the latter as collator-editor of an inherited anonymous YuánMíng manuscript rather than as author; his medical reputation is real but resides chiefly in editing and transmitting the work, not in clinical practice.

A separate Qīng-period 許槤 recorded in CBDB with an index year of 1803, distinct from the Hǎiníng philologist (id 56034). Insufficient information in CBDB to disambiguate further; included here only to flag the homonym so that the philologist’s entry is not silently merged with it.
