Dìxián 諦閑
Late-Qīng / early-Republican-period Buddhist monk; the principal Tiāntái-school revivalist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Zì Gǔxū 古虛 (commonly cited as Dìxián Gǔxū 諦閑古虛); also self-styled Zhuósān 卓三. Lay surname Zhū 朱. Native of Huángyán 黃巖 (Tāizhōu, Zhèjiāng), the historical seat of the Tiāntái school. Lifedates 1858 – 3 July 1932 (Mínguó 21.5.30, age 75). Per DILA A000048.
Forty-third-generation lineal heir of the Tiāntái school (台宗裔孫); Dharma name through the Guǎnzōngsì 觀宗寺 lineage at Níngbō, where he served as abbot and revived Tiāntái doctrinal study after a long period of decline. Founder of the Guǎnzōng yánjiūshè 觀宗研究社 (Guǎnzōng Buddhist Studies Society), the principal modern Tiāntái-school institutional foundation, whose graduates included Tánxū 倓虛, Bǎojìng 寶靜, and Tànxū 倓虛 (the founder of modern Tiāntái Buddhism in Northern China and Manchuria).
Major works include the Lèngyán-jīng xù zhǐ-wèi shū 楞嚴經序指味疏 (KR6j0721, X16 no. 313, dated 1893), a commentary on the prefatory section of the Śūraṃgama arranged under a Tiāntái-school kē 科 outline; numerous Lèngyán, Diamond, and Pure Land commentaries collected in his published yǔlù; and the Yuán-juéjīng jiǎng-yì 圓覺經講義. Modern Republican-period editions of his collected works (Dì-xián dà-shī yí-jí 諦閑大師遺集) are widely circulated.
