Tán Yuánchūn 譚元春 (1586–1637; CBDB 133498, dates from CBDB and standard biographical sources — CBDB records no birth/death years but 1586–1637 is the standard date per Wikipedia and Míngshǐ), zì Yǒuxià 友夏, hào Húwān 鵠灣, of Jìnglíng 竟陵 (modern Tiānmén 天門, Húběi). Co-founder with 鍾惺 鍾惺 of the late-Míng Jìnglíng school (Jìnglíng pài 竟陵派) of poetics, which advocated a spare, recondite, and introspective aesthetic (yōushēn gūjiào 幽深孤峭) in opposition to both the archaizing Qiánhòu Qīzǐ 前後七子 school and the more spontaneous Gōngān pài 公安派 of Yuán Hóngdào 袁宏道.
Tán failed the jìnshì examination repeatedly and died having never achieved a metropolitan degree. He co-edited with Zhōng Xīng the influential poetry anthologies Shīguī 詩歸, Gǔshī guī 古詩歸, and Tángshī guī 唐詩歸, which defined the Jìnglíng aesthetic for a generation. His own poetry collections (Tán Yǒuxià jí 譚友夏集) were admired within the school but less widely circulated than those of his collaborator.
