Xiánshǒu Fǎzàng 賢首法藏 (643–712 CE), the third patriarch of the Tang Huáyán 華嚴 school, and conventionally regarded as its principal systematizer. Of Sogdian (Kāng 康) ancestry; pupil of 智儼 Zhìyǎn (second Huáyán patriarch) and collaborator in the late-7th-century Cháng’ān translation projects of 實叉難陀 Śikṣānanda. His doctrinal works systematize the Huáyán theory of the Five Teachings (五教 wǔjiào) and the Dharmadhātu (法界) dependent-origination doctrine that is the trademark of the school. The dharma-name “Xiánshǒu” 賢首 (“Sage-leader”), bestowed by Empress Wǔ Zétiān 武則天, becomes one of the conventional appellations of the school itself (the “Xiánshǒu zōng” 賢首宗).
