Chāojùn 超晙 (Xiáqǐ Chāojùn 霞起超晙)

Mid-late seventeenth-century Línjì Chán master, dharma-heir of Xiàotáng Míngzhé 笑堂明哲 in the Línyě Tōngqí sub-line of the Mìyún Yuánwù tradition. Fǎhuì 法諱 Chāojùn 超晙 (超-generation character, dharma-grandson level of Línyě), hào Xiáqǐ 霞起 (“Cloud-Rising”). Principal dharma-heir of Xiàotáng at the time of the yǔlù compilation. Resident at Yánguān Bāoshān Língquánān 鹽官包山靈泉菴 (a hermitage on Bāoshān 包山, either an island in Tàihú or a peak near Sūzhōu).

Head editor (děng biān 等編) of KR6q0425 《笑堂和尚語錄》 (Jiāxīng Canon J28 B206). Chén Zhīshēn’s 1665 preface describes personally meeting Xiáqǐ Chāojùn at Bāoshān Língquánān and examining the ongoing cutting of the master’s yǔlù: “guò Bāoshān jìngshì xǐ jiē Xiáqǐ Jùngōng 過包山靜室喜接霞起晙公 … jí guān qí suǒ juē Wòlóng yī luán 及觀其所劂臥龍一臠” (“passing through Bāoshān’s quiet-chamber, gladly received Xiáqǐ Jùngōng … examined what he was carving, the single morsel of Wòlóng”).
