Chāoyǒng 超永

Sobriquet Bǎoshān 寶山 (“Treasure Mountain”). Early-Qīng Chán monk of the Línjì 臨濟 line, active in the Kāngxī era (late seventeenth century). Exact lifedates not transmitted.

Compiler of the Wǔdēng quánshū 五燈全書 (KR6q0022) and its 16-juan table of contents (KR6q0021), completed under imperial patronage in 1697 — the 120-juan “Complete Book of the Five Lamps”, the largest of all Chán lamp records and the de facto canonical late-imperial reference work for Chán lineage.
