Dàoyuán 道圓
Mid-Táng Chán master of the Hézé 荷澤 lineage descended from Huìnéng 慧能. DILA Authority A004166. Resided at Suìzhōu 遂州 (in modern Sìchuān), whence he is commonly designated Suìzhōu Dàoyuán 遂州道圓. Lifedates unrecorded.
Dàoyuán is principally remembered as the master under whom 宗密 Guīfēng Zōngmì (780–841) had his awakening in Yuánhé 2 (807) on reading the Yuánjué jīng 圓覺經 (KR6i0551), in the celebrated “late-cutting-late-beating” (晚斬晚打) encounter recorded in Zōngmì’s later writings. No independent works survive.
