Dàodú 道獨

Late-Míng / early-Qīng Cáodòng 曹洞 Chán master, Zōngbǎo 宗寶, 別號 Kōngyǐn 空隱. Dharma-heir of 元來 Wúyì Yuánlái (1576–1630) in the Shòuchāng 壽昌 Cáodòng revival; the principal Guǎngdōng figure of the line. Native of Nánhǎi 南海 (Guǎngzhōufǔ), lay surname Lù 陸. 1600 – 16 August 1661 (lunar 順治 18.7.22), shìshòu 62, xià 33.

At fourteen left his mother and entered a temple; practised jìngdìng 靜定 under a tree with a spontaneous opening that startled his elders. At sixteen tonsured himself, set up a thatched hermitage at Lóngshān 龍山 and lived in solitary practice for more than ten years. At twenty-nine, after his mother’s death, went with his brother Língmì 靈泌 to Bóshān, where Yuánlái renamed him Dàodú and conferred the full precepts; stayed nine months and departed. Held a shut-retreat at Jīnlún 金輪, then moved to Huángyán 黃巖.

Abbacies in sequence: Luófú 羅浮 (his Guǎngdōng seat, from which the Bóshān line extended into the south); Hǎizhuàng 海幢 in Guǎngzhōu; Léifēng 雷峰; Yǒngníng 永寧; and — in Fújiàn — Yànhú 雁湖 and finally Xīchán Chángqìngsì 西禪長慶寺 (the seat that gives him his most common style Chángqìng Zōngbǎo Dú). Died seated at Chángqìng in the 7th month of 1661.

Principal dharma-heirs: 圅昰 Tiānrán Hánshì 天然圅昰 (1608–1685, DILA A010057), the major Guǎngdōng continuer of the line; Zǔxīn Hánkě 祖心圅可 (1612–1660, DILA A012087). His 6-juan yǔlù (KR6q0373; X72 n1443) was compiled by the Ming-loyalist-official-turned-monk 今釋 Jīnshì 今釋 / Dànguī 澹歸 (1615–1680) — a dharma-grandson through Tiānrán. Dàodú’s Guǎngdōng line is particularly well-documented for its role in the Ming-loyalist Buddhist resistance: the Tiānrán Hánshì circle absorbed many yímín 遺民 literati into monastic ordination in the years after 1644.
