Dàoshēng 道生 (also Zhú Dàoshēng 竺道生, c. 355–434) was one of the foremost Chinese exegetes of the early Mahāyāna translation period, a leading disciple of 鳩摩羅什 Kumārajīva at Cháng’ān, and a principal Chinese-language editor on Kumārajīva’s translation team. He is best known for his doctrinal claim that even icchantika possess Buddha-nature — a position controversial in his lifetime that was vindicated by the later translation of the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra. He also formulated the doctrine of sudden enlightenment that anticipated Chán teaching.
