Dàohéng 道衡 (fl. late 16th c.), late-Ming Chinese Buddhist monk associated with the Huìrì Yǒngmíngsì 慧日永明寺 (a celebrated Hangzhou monastery). His one extant work, KR6m0047 Wù bù qiān zhèngliàng [lùn] zhèng 物不遷正量證 (X878), is a doctrinal-defensive essay on Sēngzhào’s Wù bù qiān lùn 物不遷論 (the second treatise of the Zhàolùn, KR6m0038 T1858), responding directly to the late-Ming polemic of 鎮澄 Yuèchuān Zhènchéng 月川鎮澄 (1547–1617). Dàohéng defends Sēngzhào’s doctrine against Zhènchéng’s critique of KR6m0048 Wù bù qiān zhèngliàng lùn (X879).
Dàohéng’s biographical record is otherwise limited. The opening of X878 establishes his pious orientation toward Sēngzhào (“the Master Zhào’s Wù bù qiān lùn — its meaning is profound, its phrases beautiful; the text is short and the doctrine complete; it is not merely the compass of students, but truly the essence of the canonical treasury”) and his polemical intent (“but for several thousand hundreds of years there has been none who knew its true exegesis”). His engagement with the late-Ming Mādhyamaka-doctrinal debate places him in the orbit of the Hangzhou-Sūzhōu Buddhist establishment of the late Wànlì 萬曆 reign (c. 1573–1620).
Works in the Kanripo corpus: KR6m0047 Wù bù qiān zhèngliàng zhèng 物不遷正量證 (X878).
