Shào Tíngcǎi 邵廷采 (1648–1711), zì Niànlǔ 念魯, hào Sīwèixìnzhāi 斯未信齋, was a Qīng Confucian scholar and historian from Yúyáo 餘姚, Shàoxīng 紹興 Prefecture, Zhèjiāng. CBDB (id 34136) confirms his dates 1648–1711. He was a student of the great loyalist philosopher and historian Huáng Zōngxī 黃宗羲 (1610–1695; 黃宗羲) and shared his teacher’s commitment to preserving the history and moral example of Míng loyalists.
Shào passed the xiùcái examination but declined Qīng officialdom, living in retirement and devoting himself to scholarship and historical writing. His major works include the Dōngnán Jìshì 東南紀事 KR4k0099, recording the Southern Míng resistance in Zhèjiāng and Fújiàn, and its companion Xīnán Jìshì 西南紀事, covering the southwest. He also wrote the Sīwèixìnzhāi wénjí 斯未信齋文集. His historical accounts are based extensively on oral testimony from survivors of the Míng-Qīng transition and are among the most important primary sources for Southern Míng history in the southeast.
Note: Wilkinson (Chinese History: A New Manual) refers to him as “邵廷寀” (with the character 寀 in place of 采); this is almost certainly a typographic variant. CBDB (id 34136) and standard modern scholarship use 邵廷采.
