Shì Wényíng 釋文瑩 (fl. XīníngYuánfēng, c. 1068–1085), Dàowēn 道溫. Native of Qiántáng 錢塘 (modern Hángzhōu). The most prolific literatus-monk of the central-Northern-Sòng era and the only major Buddhist cleric whose secular anecdote-collections entered the Sìkù mainstream. Relocated from his native Wú to Jīngzhōu (modern Húběi), where he resided at the Jīnluánsì 金鑾寺 monastery beside the Xiāng River — the setting evoked in the title of his KR3l0045 Xiāngshān yělù 湘山野錄 (composed Xīníng, c. 1068–1077). His later KR3l0046 Yùhú yěshǐ 玉壺野史 (composed Yuánfēng, c. 1078–1085) was written at his retirement-place Yùhú and is more systematic in its drawing on the documentary literature (“I have collected several thousand juàn of literary collections from the founding to Xīníng — the shéndàobēi, mùzhì, xíngzhuàng, shílù, zòuyì — and assembled their content into one work”). CBDB id 34797 records the name without firm lifedates.

His literary friendships are well-attested: he was acquainted with Sū Shùnqīn 蘇舜欽 and Ōuyáng Xiū 歐陽修 (delivering Sū’s letter of introduction to the demoted Ōuyáng at Chúzhōu, per Xiāngshān yělù’s own entry — though Lì È’s Sòng shī jìshì reports the opposite); he was a close associate of Xīníng-era poets. His Buddhist identity is conspicuous only in the jìyǐn details of certain entries; the works are primarily secular bǐjì.

The Tàizōng accession entry in the Xiāngshān yělù xùlù (the so-called “chìshǔ tóng” 燭斧聲 axe-tapping-candle anecdote suggesting fratricide) is the single most-debated passage in his corpus and one of the most consequential interpretive cruxes in Sòng historiography.
