Qián Shìshēng 錢士升 (1575–1652), zì Yìzhī 抑之, hào Yùlěng 御冷 and Sàiān 塞庵, posthumous title Wényì 文毅 (Southern-Míng); native of Jiāshàn 嘉善 (Zhèjiāng). Zhuàngyuán of Wànlì 44 / bǐngchén (1616, first-place jìnshì). Rose to Lǐbù shìláng under Chóngzhēn, then Dōnggé dàxuéshì (Grand Secretary of the Eastern Pavilion) in Chóngzhēn 8 / 1635, but was forced out by Wēn Tǐrén 溫體仁 in 1637 and returned home to Jiāshàn. He survived the Míng–Qīng transition and lived on as a yímín until 1652. A close Dōnglín sympathiser, he supplied a preface (now in the editions descending from Qián Fēn’s first impression) to the Máoyán jí (KR4e0243) of 魏學洢. The Sìkù tiyao criticises that preface — written by Qián and others — for praising Wèi Xuéyī as one who ‘died for his father’ (yǔnshēn xùnfù) while suppressing the more painful zhuībǐ / pursuit-for-restitution that actually drove him to his end. His son 錢棻 edited and printed the Máoyán jí in its first edition. CBDB 86453. Míngshǐ j. 251.
