Chén Zǐlóng 陳子龍 (1608–1647), zì Rénzhōng 人中 (later changed to Wòzǐ 臥子), biézì Yìfú 軼符, hào Dàzūn 大樽 / Hǎishì 海士, posthumous title Zhōngyù 忠裕 (granted by the Southern-Míng Lúwáng court). Native of Huátíng 華亭 (modern Sōngjiāng 松江, Shànghǎi). Jìnshì of Chóngzhēn 10 / dīngchǒu (1637). One of the dominant younger literary voices of the late Míng — the leading figure of the Yúnjiān shīpài 雲間詩派 and a chief organiser of the Jǐshè 幾社 (the literary society parallel to the Suzhōu-based Fùshè). With Xià Yǔnyí 夏允彝, Xú Fúyuǎn 徐孚遠 and others, he compiled the great late-Míng statecraft encyclopaedia Huáng Míng jīngshì wénbiān 皇明經世文編 (1638). After 1644 he joined the Southern-Míng resistance, served briefly under the Hóngguāng court, and after the fall of Sōngjiāng plotted a rising with the Lúwáng régime; captured in 1647 by Qīng forces, he drowned himself en route to Nánjīng (or, in another tradition, in a river escape). The Wàn-lì-and-after revival of zhuàngyǔ (the cí lyric) is largely to his credit, in particular his anthology Yúnjiān èr Chénzǐ shīyú 雲間二陳子詩餘 (with Chén Pèi 陳沛). His preface to the Ní Wénzhēn jí (KR4e0240) dates from late 1642 / rénwǔ and records his three years’ attendance on 倪元璐 at Yuèzhōng. CBDB 29584. Míngshǐ j. 277.
