Chén Zhuō 陳焯 (b. 1631, zì Mògōng 默公), of Tóngchéng 桐城 (Ānhuī). Jìnshì of Shùnzhì 9 (rénchén, 1652); appointed shùjíshì (Hànlín bachelor). Withdrew early on grounds of deafness (ěrlóng gàoguī) and never returned to office. Lived in retirement at Tóngchéng devoted to scholarship. Sole transmitted major work: the SòngYuán shī huì 宋元詩會 KR4h0158 in 100 juǎn — a comprehensive SòngYuán poetry anthology with extensive biographical xiǎozhuàn, compiled over more than 20 years and shown to 王士禛 Wáng Shìzhēn in Kāngxī jiǎzǐ (1684) when Wáng was on an imperial commission to the south. Wáng’s Xiāngzǔ bǐjì 香祖筆記 records the encounter: Chén Zhuō arrived with two attendants carrying enormous sacks containing his manuscript (described as several tens of large volumes) and laid them out before Wáng. He told Wáng: “These are the SòngYuán shī huì I have edited over the past 20 years, awaiting your judgement before printing.” The final printed SòngYuán shī huì is much shorter than what Wáng saw — perhaps Chén pared down after Wáng’s review. CBDB id 81450 (the relevant MíngQīng person, born 1631). The catalog meta’s “b. 1733” is clearly a typographical error — Chén was jìnshì in 1652 and presented his compilation to Wáng Shìzhēn in 1684. No CBDB-verified death-date.
