Late-Míng shānrén 山人 literatus, antiquarian, and prolific publisher of Huátíng 華亭 (Sōngjiāng prefecture, mod. Shànghǎi). After abandoning the examination track in his late twenties, he settled on Mt. Kūn 崑山 and Mt. Shé 佘山 as a celebrated recluse-author, becoming, together with his friend Dǒng Qíchāng 董其昌, one of the two pre-eminent cultural figures of the Sōngjiāng region in the late Wànlì and Tiānqǐ eras. His vast output of bǐjì 筆記, anthologies, and miscellanies — much of it under the rubric of the Bǎoyán táng mìjí 寶顏堂秘笈 series he edited — made him one of the most-published authors of the late Míng.
