Early-Heian Japanese Sanron 三論 monk, resident at Gangō-ji 元興寺 of Nara. Conventionally dated 835–871 (with a variant terminus of 874 reported by Hōbōgirin). Principal compiler of KR6i0318 《金光明最勝王經玄樞》 Konkōmyō saishōō-kyō genzū (T2196), a ten-fascicle Sanron-school exegesis of the Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra (Yìjìng recension, T665 = KR6i0303). The work’s own preface (by Sugawara no Koreyoshi 菅原是善, 812–880) frames the Genzū as the continuation of a Sanron transmission descending from his predecessor at Daian-ji, Gonsō 勤操 (758–827); a colophon-lineage in the Taishō text traces the further descent of the Genzū tradition through ten generations down to the late-Heian-period Kanjuji master Kanshin 寛信.

His doctrinal method, as articulated in the Genzū preface, is to take Paramārtha 真諦 (Zhēndì, 499–569) as the root of the commentarial tradition (根本) and Jñānagupta 闍那 as the branches (枝葉), collecting and harmonising the views of multiple earlier masters into a single exegetical synthesis. No other works survive securely under his name. The variant graph 願暁 appears in some Japanese reference works in place of 願曉.
