Gù Zhèn 顧鎮
Zì Bèijiǔ 備九, hào Gǔqiū 古湫; also Yúdōng 虞東, from the ancient name Hǎiyú 海虞 of his native Chángshú 常熟 (modern Jiāngsū) and his residence east of the city wall. Jìnshì of Qiánlóng 19 (1754, 甲戌科 二甲 11). Rose to zhǔshì 主事 in the Imperial Clan Court (宗人府主事), and directed the Báilùdòng 白鹿洞 and Zhōngshān 鍾山 academies. Biography: Qīng shǐ lièzhuàn 清史列傳 j. 68.

Surviving works: Yúdōng xuéshī 虞東學詩 (KR1c0065, 12 juan, WYG — his most substantial surviving scholarly work); Sānlǐ zhájì 三禮札記 (attested in Qīng shǐ lièzhuàn); literary collection Yúdōng xiānshēng wénlù 虞東先生文錄. The sometimes-attributed Sānjiā shī bǔzhù 三家詩補注 is not reliably his and should not be cited to him without fresh verification.
Gù is best known for his mediation between Hàn-learning and Sòng-learning positions on the Shījīng — neither wholly defending the Xiǎo xù against Zhū Xī’s Shī jí zhuàn, nor wholly siding with Zhū against the Xù — a position set out most fully in the ten shī shuō 詩說 essays prefixed to Yúdōng xuéshī.
