Mǎ Tíngluán 馬廷鸞 (1222–1289), Xiángzhòng 翔仲, hào Wánfāngbìngsǒu 玩芳病叟, zhāimíng 齋名 Bìwú 碧梧, was one of the last Right Grand Councilors of the Southern Sòng. Native of Lèpíng 樂平 in Ráozhōu 饒州 (Jiāngxī). Jìnshì of Chúnyòu 7 (1247). He held a long sequence of mid-level court posts under Lǐzōng 理宗: starting as a Hànlín biānxiū 編脩, then on the Yúshǐtái 御史台 (Censorate), then on the Qǐjū shěrén 起居舍人 (Diarist) bench. In 1265 he was appointed Vice-Commissioner of the Bureau of Military Affairs (qiānshū Shūmìyuàn shì 簽書樞密院事), promoted to Tóngzhī Shūmìyuàn shì 同知樞密院事 in 1267, concurrently Cānzhī zhèngshì 參知政事 in 1268, and rose to Right Grand Councilor (yòu chéngxiàng 右丞相) concurrently Shūmì shǐ 樞密使 in Xiánchún 5 (1269). He withdrew from the chancellorship in Xiánchún 8 (1272), refusing to remain under 賈似道 Jiǎ Sìdào’s regime, and spent the last seventeen years of his life in retirement at Lèpíng, surviving the conquest. He did not serve under the Yuán (CBDB Notes: “He did not take office under Yuán. CHECK wife’s, born Zhāng, funerary inscription”). The Sòngshǐ 414 carries his biography.

The catalog meta lists Mǎ as 1223–1289; CBDB (15501) and the standard biographies give 1222–1289, with the 1222 birth date preferred here. The composition window of his surviving collection (1248–1289) covers his full official-and-retirement career.

The Sòngshǐ records a substantial list of Mǎ’s writings, most now lost: Liùjīng jízhuàn 六經集傳 (Collected Commentaries on the Six Classics), YǔMèng huìbiān 語孟會編 (Compilation on the Lúnyǔ and Mèngzǐ), Chǔcí bǔjì 楚辭補記, ZhūSì yìbiān 洙泗裔編 (a Zhū Xī-school history), Dú Zhuāng bǐjì 讀莊筆記, and the historical Dúshǐ xúnbiān 讀史旬編 (a Lǚ Zǔqiān-style Dàshì jì-format chronological compendium from Yáo through the end of the Five Dynasties). All but the Dúshǐ xúnbiān fragments — preserved in the Yǒnglè dàdiǎn and recovered by the Sìkù editors as the final juàn of the Bìwú wánfāng jí — are lost. His son 馬端臨 Mǎ Duānlín (c. 1254–1323) inherited the family’s historiographic project and produced the Wénxiàn tōngkǎo 文獻通考 KR2m0014, one of the most important historical-and-institutional encyclopaedias of the SòngYuán transition.

Compiled works in the Kanripo corpus: KR4d0381 Bìwú wánfāng jí 碧梧玩芳集 — 24 juàn, edited by his son Mǎ Duānlín and preserved only in the Sìkù Yǒnglè dàdiǎn reconstruction.
