Gāo Lián 高濂 (fl. Wànlì 1573–1620), zì Shēnfǔ 深父, hào Ruìnán 瑞南 and “Húshàng táohuāyú” 湖上桃花漁 (“Lake-side Peach-Blossom Fisher”); native of Qiántáng 錢塘 (Hángzhōu). A late-Míng literatus, dramatist, and connoisseur. His chuánqí play Yùzān jì 玉簪記 (The Jade Hairpin) is one of the principal late-Míng romantic chuánqí dramas and is still performed in Kūnqǔ repertoire today. He also wrote the Jiéfā jì 節孝記. His major prose work is the Zūn shēng bā jiān 遵生八牋 (KR3j0172), the foundational late-Míng manual of the cultivated gentleman’s life — combining yǎngshēng, seasonal regimens, connoisseurship, dietary therapy, and recluse biographies. Discussed extensively in the modern scholarship on late-Míng material culture (Craig Clunas, Superfluous Things, 1991; Wai-yee Li, T’oung Pao 81, 1995). Biographical evidence is principally from his own prefaces; precise lifedates are not established.
