Yuānhú Yānshuǐ Sǎnrén 鸳湖烟水散人 (“The Water-Mist Wanderer of Yuānyāng Lake”) is the pen name attributed on the original title page of Zhēnzhū Bó 珍珠舶 (KR4k0290). The toponym Yuānhú 鸳湖 (Mandarin Duck Lake) is an alternate name for Nányāng Lake in Jiāxīng 嘉興, Zhèjiāng, suggesting a Jiāxīng connection for the author. The true identity of Yuānhú Yānshuǐ Sǎnrén has been tentatively proposed to be Xú Zhèn 徐震, an early Qīng writer who has also been proposed — without conclusive proof — as the author of Yún Xiān Xiào 雲仙笑 (KR4k0285), Hépǔ Zhū 合浦珠, and other early Qīng popular fiction. None of these identifications has been firmly established. Biographical details (native place, examination record, official career, life dates) are unknown. No CBDB entry has been located.
Note: this pen name is distinct from 攜李煙水散人 (Xīlǐ Yānshuǐ Sǎnrén), the author of Hépǔ Zhū 合浦珠 (KR4k0128), though the two “wandering recluse of misty waters” pen names are similar and occasionally confused in secondary literature.
