Jìnshì of Kāngxī 30 (1691, xīnwèi), entering the Hànlín. Long career through the late-Kāngxī, Yōngzhèng, and into the early-Qiánlóng courts. Rose to Lǐbù shàngshū and Wényuāngé dàxuéshì (Grand Secretary). One of the most prolific Qing literary editors and bibliographic-philologists: famous for his Wénxīn diāolóng jí zhù 文心雕龍輯註 (a major recension of Liú Xié’s Wén xīn diāo lóng 文心雕龍 critical treatise, with synoptic annotation) and for his work on the various early-Qīng Sìkù-precursor projects.
In the present context, Huáng is the editor of the final 8-juan recension of 姜宸英 Jiāng Chényīng’s Zhànyuán jí (KR4f0037), drawing on Jiāng’s own preliminary Zhànyuán wèidìng gǎo and supplemented from manuscript materials gathered after Jiāng’s death in prison. Huáng’s editorial work is generally considered authoritative for early-Qīng gǔwén canon-formation.
