Běncháo gāosēng zhuàn 本朝高僧傳

Biographies of Eminent Monks of Our Country

A seventy-five-fascicle collection of Japanese eminent-monk biographies compiled by the Edo-period Sōtō Zen monk Mangen Shiban 卍元師蠻 (1626–1710), completed in 1702. Modelled on the Chinese Gāosēng zhuàn tradition, it remains a fundamental source for premodern Japanese Buddhist biography, including the late-Heian Sanron-school monk Chinkai.
