About the work
A 100-juǎn synoptic chronological table covering 3,725 years of Chinese history from the first year of Yáo 堯 (traditional date 2356 BCE, jiǎchén 甲辰) down to Zhìzhèng 28 / wùshēn 戊申 (1368), the fall of the Yuán. Compiled on the imperial commission of the Kāngxī 康熙 emperor between 1707 and 1712. The structure follows the model of Sīmǎ Qiān’s Shǐjì tables and Sīmǎ Guāng’s Tōngjiàn mùlù 通鑑目錄, with year-strands woven through event-strands (niánjīng shìwěi 年經事緯). Each year is shown in a stratified table: the top register (shàngfāng 上方) gives the legitimate ruling line (zhèngtǒng) — this is left blank during periods of disunion (the ChǔHàn interregnum, the Wáng Mǎng usurpation, the Six Dynasties, the Five Dynasties); the various contending regimes are shown in lower registers; barbarian / foreign affairs are shown in the bottom register. Major events of feudal enfeoffment and regression are detailed; brief biographical highlights are integrated; each dynasty is provided with a separately appended genealogical chart. The compilation was first based on the manuscript draft of the bùyī (commoner-scholar) Gōng Shìjiǒng 龔士炯 — submitted to the throne — and was first taken up by Gōngbù shìláng Zhōu Qīngyuán 周清原, who died before its completion; the project was transferred to Nèigé xuéshì Wáng Zhīshū 王之樞, who completed it with Zhōu Qīngyuán’s son Zhōu Jiāzhēn 周嘉楨 as xiéxiū (associate compiler). The Sìkù tíyào praises it as “more chronologically extensive than the Ten Tables of Sīmǎ Qiān, and richer in event-detail than the Tōngjiàn mùlù.”

Submitted by your servants, etc. The Lìdài jìshì niánbiǎo in 100 juǎn, by Imperial Lord Shèngzǔ Rénhuángdì 聖祖仁皇帝 [Kāngxī]‘s command, was edited by Nèigé xuéshì Wáng Zhīshū 王之樞. Zhīshū received the order between Kāngxī 46 and 51 (1707–1712) and submitted the table; it was earlier based on the manuscript of the bùyī (commoner) Gōng Shìjiǒng 龔士炯, and the throne had ordered Gōngbù shìláng Zhōu Qīngyuán 周清原 to edit it; Zhōu died with the work unfinished, whereupon the throne ordered Zhīshū to set up an editorial bureau at Zhōu’s residence and to compile, with Zhōu’s son Jiāzhēn as xiéxiū. Beginning from the first year of Emperor Yáo (jiǎchén) and ending with Zhìzhèng 28 of the Yuán (wùshēn) — 3,725 years in all — the work follows the format of Sīmǎ Qiān’s chronological tables and the Tōngjiàn mùlù: years as warp, events as weft; trimming the prolix to the concise. The top register registers the legitimate Heavenly position (天位), to record the legitimate ruler; for those who are not legitimate (ChǔHàn, the Lǚ regency, the Xīn of Wáng Mǎng, the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the Five Dynasties), the entry is moved to the next register and the top is left blank. Foreign peoples and outlying states are listed in the bottom register, neat and unconfused. Within the work, princes and nobles’ patents of enfeoffment, their successions and demotions, and the beginnings and ends of personal careers are detailed; for each dynasty a separately appended genealogical chart shows the lineage. Compared to Sīmǎ Qiān’s Ten Tables, the chronological span is far greater; compared to the Tōngjiàn mùlù, the event-detail is more precise. Before the juǎn there is the jìnbiǎo 進表 (presentation memorial) and fánlì (editorial principles), with the Sānyuán jiǎzǐ jìnián tú 三元甲子紀年圖 (the great sexagenary cycle chart) at the head — truly an essential of the historical reader. Abstract
The Yùdìng lìdài jìshì niánbiǎo is the principal Kāngxī-era imperial synthesis of the Chinese chronological record, completed during the fervor of late-Kāngxī “harmonisation” projects in the imperial library — the same milieu that produced the Pèiwén yùnfǔ 佩文韻府, the Yùdìng quánTángshī 御定全唐詩, and the Tújī chéngxíng yùpiān 圖籍成形玉篇. Its formal innovation is the systematic implementation of zhèngtǒng logic in a multi-register chronological table: the top register is reserved for the legitimate ruling line, with the table physically marking interregnum periods (the ChǔHàn, the Lǚ regency, the WángMǎng Xīn, the Six Dynasties, the Five Dynasties) by leaving the top register empty. This editorial choice transcribes the SòngMíng gāngmù doctrinal commitment into table form, anchoring the orthodox lineage as a Heavenly-ordained cosmographic feature. The work runs from the traditional founding date of the Yáo reign (jiǎchén of 2356 BCE) to the fall of the Yuán in 1368 — a deliberate choice to terminate before the Míng so that the work could be safely classified as historical rather than as touching on the politically sensitive MíngQīng transition.
The Sìkù editors — and most subsequent scholars — have judged it the most useful single chronological reference work for Chinese history before the introduction of Western-style synoptic tables. The principal Qīng successor in the same form is Wāng Yuánzhī’s 汪元芝 Zēngbǔ Lìdài jìshì niánbiǎo 增補歷代紀事年表 (1813). Wilkinson (Chinese History, §39.7) lists the Lìdài jìshì niánbiǎo among the standard Qīng-imperial chronological reference works alongside the Lìshí biǎo 歷史表 by Wàn Sītóng (KR2d0021).

Other points of interest
The opening Sānyuán jiǎzǐ jìnián tú 三元甲子紀年圖 — the great cosmographic chart showing all sexagenary cycles in three-cycle (180-year) units across Chinese history — is one of the most ambitious early-Qīng visualisations of the gānzhī system, and continues to be cited in modern chronological reference works. The work’s editorial choice to leave blank the zhèngtǒng register during periods of disunion is methodologically aggressive: it converts the gāngmù doctrine of a single line of legitimate rulers from a verbal-evaluative claim into a typographic-cosmographic claim. This use of negative space to enforce orthodoxy is a distinctive Kāngxī-era contribution to Chinese historical visualisation.
