Dōngxī rì tán lù 東溪日談錄
Daily Discussions at Dōng-xī by 周琦 (Zhōu Qí, zì Tíngxǐ 廷璽, 明)
About the work
An 18-juan classical-philosophical biji by Zhōu Qí of Mǎpíng (Guǎngxī), in 13 thematic categories: Xìng dào tán (1). The work derives doctrinally from the HéDōng xuépài of Xuē Xuān (KR3a0079 author). The Guǎngxī tōng zhì records a separate Rú zhèng piān discussing Xuē Hédōng’s learning; the SKQS tíyào identifies this as juan 15 of the present work — not a separate composition. First printed in Jiājìng dīngyǒu (1537) by Lǚ Jǐngméng 呂景蒙; the SKQS-base appears to be a manuscript transcription, the original woodblocks having been lost.
Tiyao
We respectfully submit that the Dōngxī rì tán lù in 18 juan was composed by Zhōu Qí of the Míng. Qí, zì Tíngxǐ, was a man of Mǎpíng. Jìnshì of Chénghuà xīnchǒu (1481); rose in office to Nánjīng Hùbù yuánwài láng. Qí’s learning issued from Hédōng Xuē Xuān. This compilation records his heart-attainments, divided into 13 categories: 2 juan Xìng dào tán; 1 juan Lǐ qì tán; 2 juan Jì sì tán; 1 juan Xué shù tán; 1 juan Chū chǔ tán; 1 juan Wù lǐ tán; 3 juan Jīng zhuàn tán; 1 juan Zhù shù tán; 2 juan Shǐ xì tán; 1 juan Rú zhèng tán; 1 juan Wén cí tán; 1 juan Yì duān tán; 1 juan Pì yì tán.
The Guǎngxī tōng zhì records his Rì tán lù in 18 juan; further records he composed Rú zhèng piān discussing Xuē Hédōng’s learning. Now examining: the Rú zhèng is the 15th juan of this book, not a separate work.
Before is Lǚ Jǐngméng’s preface saying the book was printed in Jiājìng dīngyǒu (1537). But this present text is in transmitted-handwriting form — perhaps the printing-blocks were already lost, and later hands recorded and preserved it. Qí’s character was upright, careful, and sincere — esteemed in his home district. His book also takes the LiánLuò line as basis, no shame to him.

Abstract
The Dōngxī rì tán lù is a useful Mid-Míng Lǐxué-orthodox biji in the HéDōng xuépài line of Xuē Xuān. Composition window: bracketed by Zhōu Qí’s working life from his 1481 jìnshì; the work was published posthumously in 1537. The frontmatter brackets to 1481–1537.
The substantive content — 13 thematic categories spanning metaphysics, ritual, learning, ethics, classics, history, and heterodoxy — is methodologically conventional Mid-Míng Lǐxué but provides a useful prosopographical window into the HéDōng tradition’s reach into the Guǎngxī periphery. The juan on Xuē Xuān (j. 15, Rú zhèng tán) is the principal substantive contribution: a Mid-Míng student’s evaluation of his master.
The bibliographic record: Míng shǐ yìwén zhì; Wényuāngé shūmù; Guǎngxī tōng zhì; SKQS Zǐbù — Rújiā lèi.
Translations and research
- No substantial English-language secondary literature located.
- The work is treated within studies of Mid-Míng Lǐxué lineage geography (the spread of Hé-Dōng into the southwest).
Other points of interest
The HéDōng xuépài lineage’s reach into Guǎngxī through Zhōu Qí is one of the Mid-Míng Lǐxué geographical-extension cases — comparable to the parallel reach of Wáng Yángmíng’s xīnxué through subsequent generations to the southwest. Zhōu’s solid orthodox positioning provides a useful counter-witness to the more famous Yáng-míng-school spread.
