Abstract

The Zhènglùn is the more substantive and the more politically ambitious of Yuán Zhǔn’s two works. It is structured as a series of lùn 論 on specific topics — Zhèng 政 (administration), 禮 (ritual), Xíng 刑 (punishment), and historical-classical exegesis on the Zhōu guān 周官, the Chūnqiū 春秋, the Gōngyáng 公羊 reading, and the Zuǒshì zhuàn 左氏傳. A substantial portion of the surviving fragments engages directly with the Zhōu lǐ / Zhōu guān offices, making the work an important early Jìn witness to the gǔwén 古文 reception of the Zhōu guān. Its programmatic claim — that the Zhōu guān is the authoritative framework for institutional administration — anticipates later Tang and Sòng Zhōu lǐ statecraft. The author’s identity, dating, and his relation to his father Yuán Huàn 袁渙 are treated under 袁準. The composition window is bracketed by the Western Jìn period. The received recension is a 19th-century jíyì.

Translations and research

No substantial dedicated secondary literature located in Western languages. The fullest fragment-compilation is 嚴可均 Quán Jìn wén 全晉文 j. 54. Chinese scholarship on the early reception of the Zhōu guān (e.g., 楊向奎, 沈文倬) cites the Zhènglùn as one of the earliest substantive engagements.
