About the work
The Sòng校正醫書局 base recension of the Jīnguì yàoluè — the Hàn clinical canon on miscellaneous diseases and women’s medicine — in three juan, distinct from Xú Bīn’s twenty-four-juan commentarial recension (KR3e0006). Compiled at the校正醫書局 by Sūn Qí 孫奇, Lín Yì, Gāo Bǎohéng, and others, presented to the throne in 1066. Sūn Qí’s preface, transmitted as the work’s prefatorial paratext, lays out the textual situation: Zhāng Jī’s Shānghán zábìng lùn in sixteen juan was already incomplete by the Sòng (only the Shānghán lùn in ten juan was current), and the bureau’s source for the Jīnguì yàoluè was Wáng Zhū’s 王洙 manuscript discovery, the Jīnguì yùhán yàoluè fāng 金匱玉函要略方 in three juan, recovered from worm-eaten leaves in the Imperial Library. Sūn Qí distributed each prescription beneath its corresponding symptom-pattern, took the chapter-segment from miscellaneous diseases (jumping over the cold-damage portion already covered in the Shānghán lùn) through to the dietary-prohibition chapter, twenty-five 篇 and 262 prescriptions in total, supplemented with stray prescriptions from other sources, and produced the present three-juan recension under the customary name Jīnguì fānglùn 金匱方論.
Abstract
The composition window is set at 1066, the date of the Sòng校正醫書局 collation. Wáng Zhū’s manuscript discovery cannot be precisely dated but precedes Sūn Qí’s collation; Wáng was active in the early Northern Sòng (mid-eleventh century) and the discovery is conventionally placed in the 1040s or 1050s. Sūn Qí’s preface — preserved at the head of the SBCK base text in KR3e0007_000.txt, signed by 太子右賛善大夫臣孫奇 (in some witnesses the signature appears as 高保衡, by mechanical transmission error from later editions) — explicitly notes the bureau’s editorial decisions: prescriptions placed under symptoms for clinical convenience, the cold-damage portion omitted (already in the Shānghán lùn recension presented separately), and miscellaneous prescriptions added at the end of each chapter to broaden the therapeutic repertoire. The published recension was therefore by deliberate choice no longer Wáng Zhū’s three-juan original (in which prescriptions were a separate juan) and a fortiori no longer Wáng Shūhé’s three-juan edition.
This is the textual ancestor of all later Jīnguì yàoluè prints, including KR3e0006 (Xú Bīn 1671 commentarial recension) and KR3e0008 (Jīnguì yùhán jīng 金匱玉函經, the parallel recension in eight juan with the cold-damage portion preserved).

The SBCK photographic facsimile is from the Yuán-period print, which preserves the Sòng校正醫書局 recension with high fidelity. The SKQS chose Xú Bīn’s recension precisely because it offers continuous explanatory commentary; for textual purposes, however, the SBCK base text is the closer witness to the Sòng校正醫書局 form. Modern scholarly editions (Mǎ Jìxīng 1990) collate the SBCK with the Yuán Wú Qiān 吳遷 print (preserved in Japanese collections, base of Otsuka Yasuo’s editions) to reconstruct the Sòng校正醫書局 readings.
