About the work
The Língshū xuánjiě in nine juan is the second of Huáng Yuányù’s 黃元御 four “xuánjiě” 懸解 commentaries on the foundational medical classics (the other three are Sùwèn xuánjiě KR3ea013, Nánjīng xuánjiě KR3ea063, and Shānghán xuánjiě / Jīnguì xuánjiě). The work was completed in the spring–summer of Qiánlóng 21 = 1756, just two years before Huáng’s death. Like its Sùwèn counterpart, it re-orders the Língshū’s eighty-one pian thematically while preserving the integrity of the text itself.
Prefaces
The author’s preface (KR3ea027_000.txt) opens with a programmatic statement: when Huángdì “did not wish to use poisonous drugs and stone lancets, he first established the Zhēnjīng 針經”, which is the Língshū. So the Língshū is the original (原) of the Sùwèn. All matters of needle technique (刺法), acupoint location (腧穴), channel theory (經絡), and viscera-image (臟象) take their rise from the Língshū, but the Língshū’s textual corruption is just as severe as that of the Sùwèn. The preface dates the composition precisely: bǐngzǐ èryuè 丙子二月 = February 1756. Huáng intended to begin the Língshū commentary but was first asked by Dànmíng jūshì 澹明居士 to compose a commentary on the Dàodé jīng; the Dàodé jīng commentary was completed and on 25 February 1756 Huáng began this Língshū commentary; he finished it on 2 May 1756. The preface includes Huáng’s striking polemical closing: zhàngfū dāng shān shī shū, dìng lǐ yuè 丈夫當刪詩書,定禮樂 — “a real scholar would emend the Shī and Shū and fix the Lǐ and Yuè; merely repeating others’ words like a parrot is not worth doing.”
Abstract
Doctrinally the Língshū xuánjiě is in continuity with the Sùwèn xuánjiě: Huáng reads the Língshū through his “central earth” (中土) and “qì transformation” (氣化) framework, with the Língshū’s channel theory subordinated to the systematic doctrine of the Sùwèn. He rejects 王冰 Wáng Bīng’s Sùwèn-only commentary tradition for ignoring the Língshū’s priority, and offers original interpretations of acupuncture-related chapters that have been influential in early-Republican and modern PRC acupuncture pedagogy.
