Mài Jiǎn Bǔ Yì 脈簡補義
Supplementary Meaning to the Pulse Notes by 周學海 (Zhōu Xuéhǎi, 字澂之, 號健霞, 1856–1906, 清)
About the work
A two-juan supplement to the Mài yì jiǎn mó KR3eb036, extending Zhōu Xuéhǎi’s earlier treatment with additional discussions and clinical observations drawn from his post-1891 practice. The work is conceived as an organic continuation: where the Jiǎn mó surveyed the received pulse-doctrinal literature, the Bǔ yì takes up the gaps and the new clinical evidence that the original survey had not been able to address. It is the second component of Zhōu’s four-part pulse cycle.
Prefaces
The jicheng.tw files for this title are KR3eb037_001.txt (juan 1) and KR3eb037_003.txt — _000.txt and _002.txt are absent, leaving the front-matter and the bridge between the juan only partially preserved in this corpus. The work is conventionally dated to 1893 on the basis of the Zhōu shì yī xué cóng shū publication record (the Bǔ yì appears in the second series of the cóngshū, which was printed in 1893).
Abstract
Zhōu’s Mài jiǎn bǔ yì documents the further development of his form-vs-momentum doctrine (qìxuè xíngshì; see KR3eb007), including the application of the distinction to a wider range of disease patterns and the elaboration of “momentum disrupted in form / form disrupted in momentum” sub-classes. The book is also the principal vehicle for Zhōu’s polemic against the late-Qing Western-medical view that cùnkǒu pulse-diagnosis is unreliable: where the Chóng dìng zhí jué KR3eb007 mentions this only in passing, the Bǔ yì discusses it at length.
For Zhōu’s biographical context see the person note; for the broader cycle structure see KR3eb036.
