About the work
The Chángshā fāng gēkuò in 6 juǎn is Chén Xiūyuán’s rhymed-verse pedagogical commentary on the classical formulas of Zhāng Zhòngjǐng as preserved in the Shānghán lùn 傷寒論. The title Chángshā refers to Zhāng Zhòngjǐng’s posting as Grand Administrator (tàishǒu) of Chángshā prefecture in the late Hàn — the conventional metonymy for the Shānghán lùn corpus. The work is the jīngfāng counterpart of Chén’s Shífāng gēkuò KR3ed084, and together with the Jīnguì fāng gēkuò KR3ed086 (completed by his son Chén Yuánxī) constitutes the complete Chén-school rhymed-formulary pedagogy for the Zhòngjǐng corpus.
Prefaces
The source files begin directly with body matter; no preface is present in the transmission. Chén’s xiǎoyǐn in the Shífāng gēkuò refers explicitly to the existence of an earlier Zhēnfāng gēkuò 真方歌括 (= jīngfāng rhymed-verse formulary) that had been composed but not yet printed; the Chángshā fāng gēkuò is presumably the renamed and revised printed version of this jīngfāng mnemonic project, published shortly after the Shífāng gēkuò (1801–1803) so as to complete the pedagogical pair.
Abstract
The work covers the 113 principal formulas of the Shānghán lùn together with their named jiājiǎn variants, presented in rhymed verse with brief glosses. The pedagogical conception is the same as that of the Tāngtóu gējué of Wāng Áng KR3ed083 and the Shífāng gēkuò: each formula’s name, principal constituents, indication, and key adjustments are encoded into a memorisable verse.
The pedagogical innovation of Chén Xiūyuán’s project lies in the strict pair-coupling of verse-formulary with prose-explanation: where Wāng Áng’s Tāngtóu gējué (1694) stood alone without a paired prose volume, and where Wāng’s older Yīfāng jíjiě (1682) stood alone without a paired verse volume, Chén Xiūyuán’s project explicitly delivers both formats for both corpora — verse + prose for shífāng (Shífāng gēkuò + Shífāng miàoyòng), and verse + prose for jīngfāng (Chángshā fāng gēkuò + Shānghán lùn qiǎnzhù).
This pairing is the methodological signature of Chén-school pedagogy and was widely imitated in the late Qīng. The composition window of the Chángshā fāng gēkuò is presumably 1803 (when the Shífāng gēkuò and Shífāng miàoyòng were completing their bound publication) to c. 1810, with the terminus ad quem somewhere before Chén’s late-life retirement from active publishing.
The work is filed in the catalog under KR3ed (formulary section) rather than KR3eb (Shānghán commentary section) because of its formulary-rhyme genre, despite its content being a commentary on the Shānghán formulas.

Other points of interest
The Chángshā / Jīnguì / Shífāng trilogy of Chén’s rhymed-verse formularies (the third by his son Chén Yuánxī) constitutes the most complete pedagogical project for the post-classical Chinese medical curriculum assembled in any single physician’s œuvre. Each piece can be memorised in roughly a season’s evening study; the whole corpus in roughly a year. This compactness was central to Chén-school pedagogical success and to the work’s wide adoption in late-Qīng private yīshí (apprentice-physician) teaching.
