Chén Niànzǔ 陳念祖 ( Xiūyuán 修園, also Liángyǒu 良有, 1753–1823, CBDB 81917), native of Chánglè 長樂 (modern Fújiàn). He passed the jǔrén exam (Qiánlóng 57 = 1792) and served briefly as Hébǎo zhīxiàn 河北 magistrate before retiring to teach medicine at Fúzhōu.

Chén is the most prolific medical popularizer of the QiánlóngJiāqìng era. His pedagogical output is enormous and his works served as the standard zhōngyī textbooks for two centuries. The principal works are:

  1. Yīxué shí zài yì 醫學實在易 (1808) — accessible introduction to medicine.
  2. Yīxué cóng zhòng lù 醫學從眾錄 — clinical reference.
  3. Shānghán lùn qiǎn zhù 傷寒論淺注 — accessible Shānghán lùn commentary.
  4. Jīnguì yàoluè qiǎn zhù 金匱要略淺注 — companion to (3).
  5. Yī yī ǒu cuì 醫醫偶萃 — collected medical essays.
  6. Niǔ wàn lùn / Nǚ kē yào zhǐ 女科要旨 — gynaecology.
  7. Shénnóng běncǎo jīng dú 神農本草經讀 (KR3ec046) — pharmacological reading.

The collected Xiūyuán quánshū 修園全書 served as the standard physician textbook for two centuries.

CBDB has two Chén Niànzǔ records: 81917 with lifedates 1753–1823 (the relevant entry) and 81918 with 1852–1890 (a different, later figure).

Principal modern edition: Lǐ Lǐ 李力, Chén Xiūyuán yīxué quánshū 陳修園醫學全書 (Renmin weisheng, 2002).
