Shānghán lùn gāng mù 傷寒論綱目

Outline of the Treatise on Cold Damage by 沈金鰲 (Shěn Jīn’áo, Zhīwēi 芷薇, 1717–1776, 清)

About the work

A sixteen-juan synthesis of Shānghán lùn doctrine prepared by the Wúxī polymath 沈金鰲 Shěn Jīn’áo (1717–1776), composed as part of his comprehensive medical cóngshū the Shěn shì zùnshēng shū 沈氏尊生書 (1773). The work assembles selected canonical passages of the Shānghán under topical “outline” 綱 headings, with quoted commentary from earlier authorities (成無己 Chéng Wúyǐ, 方有執 Fāng Yǒuzhí, 喻昌 Yú Chāng, 柯琴 Kē Qín, etc.) under “subordinate” 目 sections, in the analytical style typical of Qiánlóng-period medical compilations.

Abstract

The composition window of 1774–1775 reflects the publication of the Zùnshēng shū in 1773 followed by Shěn’s continued editorial activity through 1776 when he died. Shěn was a 1750 jǔrén who turned to medicine after a frustrated examination career; his medical work is closer to literati-physician practice than to specialist clinical writing. The Gāng mù is one of seven main components of the Zùnshēng shū, alongside the more widely-cited Zábìng yuánliú xīzhú 雜病源流犀燭. The work’s distinctive contribution is its synthetic presentation of multiple commentary lines (Chéng, Fāng, Yú, Kē) — a feature that made it widely useful in late-imperial medical pedagogy.
