Shānghán bǔ lì 傷寒補例

Supplementary Cases on Cold Damage by 周學海 (Zhōu Xuéhǎi, Chèngzhī 澂之, hào Jiànchí 健之, 1856–1906, 清)

About the work

A two-juan late-Qīng Shānghán supplement by the Ānhuī physician 周學海 Zhōu Xuéhǎi (1856–1906), a jìnshì of 1885 who turned to medicine after his official career. The work presents 88 supplementary clinical cases organized around problematic Shānghán syndromes, with detailed Zhōu commentary. Zhōu is also known for his comprehensive Mài jiǎn 脈簡 (pulse handbook) and for editing the Zhōu shì yī xué cóng shū 周氏醫學叢書 (a major late-Qīng medical reprint program).

Abstract

Composition window 1882–1906 reflects Zhōu’s medical activity from his early thirties to his death. The Bǔ lì draws on Zhōu’s own clinical practice supplemented with cases from earlier authorities; its distinctive feature is the systematic attempt to match canonical Shānghán prescriptions to clinical scenarios that the Shānghán lùn itself treats only briefly. The work is one of the principal late-Qīng Shānghán supplements and was part of the broader Qīng synthesis movement.
