About the work
A six-juan late-Northern-Sòng comprehensive commentary on the Shānghán canon by the Qízhōu 蘄州 (modern Húběi) physician 龐安時 Páng Ānshí (字 Ānchéng 安常, ca. 1042–1099). The work — preface by 黃庭堅 Huáng Tíngjiān — is the second great Northern-Sòng Shānghán commentary after 韓祗和 Hán Zhīhé’s Wēizhǐ lùn (KR3ef008), and the principal vehicle for Páng’s distinctive doctrinal synthesis.
Abstract
The composition date 1100 is conventional (just before Páng’s death; some authorities give 1099 or 1102). Páng — a contemporary of 蘇軾 Sū Shì and 黃庭堅 Huáng Tíngjiān, who were both his close friends and patients — was the most distinguished medical practitioner of the late Northern Sòng outside the校正醫書局 circle. Páng’s distinctive doctrinal contribution is the integration of Shānghán doctrine with the doctrine of yùn qì 運氣 (climatic-influence) and biāoběn 標本 (branch and root), anticipating the integrative direction of JīnYuán Héjiān-school synthesis. The Zǒngbìng lùn circulated widely in the SòngYuánMíng and was a major source for later commentators.

Other points of interest
黃庭堅 Huáng Tíngjiān’s preface to Páng’s Zǒngbìng lùn is one of the most-cited Sòng literati endorsements of a medical text and one of the most important sources for Páng’s biography. 蘇軾 Sū Shì wrote a letter on Páng’s treatment of him for an eye condition (in Sū’s Yú lù 語錄), which is another primary biographical witness.
