Yángkē gāngyào 瘍科綱要
A Framework for Ulcer Medicine by 張壽頤 (Zhāng Shòuyí, hào Shānléi 山雷, 1873–1934)
About the work
One of the most influential Republican-era TCM textbooks for external medicine, in 2 juǎn (卷上 / 卷下). Zhāng Shòuyí (hào Shānléi 山雷) was a founding teacher of the modern Chinese-medicine school system; this work was used as classroom material at the Lánxī Zhōngyī Zhuānmén Xuéxiào 蘭谿中醫專門學校 (Zhèjiāng), one of the first formal TCM colleges. The work marks the modernisation of the yángkē genre — moving from miscellany-of-formulae to systematic clinical reasoning — and is one of the principal Republican-era responses to the perceived need to professionalise traditional surgery against Western competition. First published 1917; circulated in revised form into the late 1920s.
Abstract
There is no _000.txt (no front-matter file) in the Kanripo digitisation; the WYG-editions field does not apply to this Republican text. The work opens directly with juǎn shàng 第一章 Wàiyáng zǒng lùn 外瘍總論, which functions as its programmatic preface. Zhāng polemically rejects Wáng Hóngxù 王洪緒 (cf. KR3ek017 Wàikē zhèngzhì quánshēng jí) for equating yōng 癰 with yang and jū 疽 with yin, arguing instead that yōng simply means “blockage” (yōng 壅) and jū “obstruction” (jǔ 沮 / zǔ 阻), and that both must be analysed by careful application of yīnyáng along multiple axes simultaneously (location, depth, speed of progression, virulence, hardness, pain quality). He aligns himself doctrinally with the Yīzōng jīnjiàn · Wàikē xīnfǎ yàojué KR3ek009 tradition against the quánshēng pài’s simpler colour-based dichotomy.
The two juǎn form a systematic wàikē handbook combining classical theory with modern textbook organisation. Topical sections cover the general theory of external lesions (yīnyáng, swelling, pain, itch, pus, fistula formation, sequelae), then specific lesion classes (yōngjū 癰疽, liúzhù 流注, luǒlì 瘰癧, tánhé 痰核, yángméi 楊梅, dīngdú 疔毒). Strong didactic and critical orientation throughout; explicitly written as classroom teaching material.
Zhāng Shòuyí (hào Shānléi 山雷; zì Shòufǔ 壽甫) was born in Jiādìng 嘉定 (modern Shànghǎi) in 1873 and died in 1934. After the 1911 revolution he taught at the Lánxī medical college, where he trained a generation of Mínguó physicians. His major works include the Běncǎo zhèngyì 本草正義 (KR3ec063, printed 1932), the Zhōngfēng kǎoquán 中風斠詮, and the Shānléi yīxué cóngshū 山雷醫學叢書. The Běncǎo zhèngyì is the principal Republican-era critical pharmacopoeia and the immediate predecessor of the modern PRC TCM materia medica curriculum.

Other points of interest
The work’s explicit pedagogical orientation makes it one of the clearest documents of the early-Republican TCM-college transformation of wàikē: the lesion-by-lesion miscellany of late-imperial surgical handbooks gives way to a textbook structured around general theory, then disease classes, then differential and prescription. Compare Tánlì fǎmén KR3ek033, a contemporary work that retains the older family-lineage jiāchuán form.
