Zēngbǔ píngzhù Liǔxuǎn yīàn 增補評注柳選醫案

Supplemented and Critically Annotated Edition of the Liǔ-Selected Case Records edited and supplemented by later hands (Republican-era), based on 柳寶詒 Liǔ Bǎoyí 柳寶詒 (1842–1901).

About the work

An eight-juǎn supplemented edition of KR3ep021 Liǔxuǎn sìjiā yīàn — the late-Qīng anthology of cases from four early-to-mid-Qīng Jiāngsū physicians (Cáo Cúnxīn 曹存心, Wáng Jiǔfēng 王九峰, Gāo Bǐngjūn 高炳鈞 = Gāo Jǐntíng, Cài Lěngān 蔡冷庵) edited by Liǔ Bǎoyí — with further annotations and supplementary case material added by Republican-era editors. The supplementing tradition began with Dīng Gānrén 丁甘仁 (丁甘仁) and other Shànghǎi-Ménghé physicians shortly after Liǔ’s death and continued through the early Republican period. The result is the most heavily-annotated of all the late-Qīng casebook anthologies and a primary teaching text of the early Republican-era Shànghǎi medical schools.

Abstract

For Liǔ Bǎoyí’s biographical background and the structure of the underlying selection see KR3ep021. The present Zēngbǔ píngzhù (“supplemented and critically annotated”) edition reflects the post-1904 reception of Liǔ’s anthology in the early-Republican Shànghǎi medical-school world. The composition window 1904–1920 reflects the first printing of Liǔ’s original anthology by his disciples (1904) and the principal supplementing-and-annotating phase of the early Republic. The work is closely associated with the Shànghǎi Tóngjì 同濟 and Shànghǎi Zhōngyī Zhuānmén Xuéxiào 上海中醫專門學校 curricula of the 1910s–1920s.

The annotations in the supplemented edition draw heavily on the Ménghé clinical synthesis as it had matured by the early twentieth century, with extensive cross-references to the Línzhèng zhǐnán yīàn KR3ep010 tradition, the Wángshì yīàn KR3ep083 series of Wáng Mèngyīng = [[王士雄], and the Zhāng Yùqīng yīàn KR3ep006. The result is one of the most thoroughly cross-referenced of all Chinese-medicine casebook anthologies and a key source for the late-Qīng / early-Republican consolidation of the Jiāngnán medical canon.
