Liǔ Bǎoyí yīlùn yīàn 柳寶詒醫論醫案
Liǔ Bǎoyí’s Medical Discussions and Case Records by 柳寶詒 Liǔ Bǎoyí (zì Gǔsūn 谷孫, 1842–1901), late-Qīng physician of Jiāngyīn 江陰 (Jiāngsū), a key figure of the Mènghé 孟河 medical school of the late nineteenth century.
About the work
A two-juǎn compilation of clinical-theoretical discussions (yīlùn 醫論) and case-records (yīàn 醫案) by Liǔ Bǎoyí, gathered posthumously from his clinical notes and published in the early-Republican era as part of the broader effort to preserve the Mèng-hé-school clinical-doctrinal corpus. The catalog meta supplies no personal author tag; the work’s title and self-identification establish Liǔ as the author. The compilation falls in the standard Mènghé-school clinical-doctrinal genre: case-records prefaced by aetiological-doctrinal reasoning, with explicit cross-reference to the 葉桂 Yè Tiānshì 葉天士 / 吳瑭 Wú Tāng Wēnbìng canon and the 張仲景 Zhāng Zhòngjǐng Shānghán classical-formulary tradition. Liǔ’s distinctive doctrinal contribution is the integration of the Wēnbìng school’s clinical methodology with a rigorous jīngfāng engagement — an integration that defined the Mènghé school’s late-Qīng synthesis and shaped Republican-era Chinese internal medicine.
Prefaces
The jicheng.tw text carries the standard front-matter prefaces of the work; the present digital exemplar’s paratextual content varies by edition. Liǔ Bǎoyí’s earlier preface to KR3eq006 Yèxuǎn yīhéng (1894) is the principal datable self-statement of his doctrinal position.
Abstract
Liǔ Bǎoyí 柳寶詒 (Gǔsūn, 1842–1901), Jiāng-yīn-region physician active in the late Qīng, is the founding figure of the late-Qīng / Republican Mènghé branch of the Wēnbìng school. The catalog meta lists him conventionally as Qīng; the composition window 1870–1907 reflects (a) his maturing clinical career from the early 1870s and (b) the posthumous compilation date of the case-record collection. His other principal works are the Wēnrè féngyuán 溫熱逢源 — an important late-Qīng systematic treatise on warm-disease — and his contributions to the Shàoxīng Medical Society publications under Hé Liánchén 何廉臣. See person note 柳寶詒 for biographical detail.
Doctrinal significance: the work is one of the principal documents of the Mènghé school’s late-Qīng synthesis between Wēnbìng aetiological-doctrinal reasoning and classical-formulary jīngfāng clinical method. The Mènghé school — centered on Chángzhōu 常州 / Jiāngyīn 江陰 and including 費伯雄 Fèi Bóxióng (1800–1879), 馬培之 Mǎ Péizhī (1820–1903), and the early-Republican 丁甘仁 Dīng Gānrén (1865–1926) — was the most influential single late-Qīng medical lineage and the principal source of the Republican-era Chinese internal-medicine tradition.
