About the work
A four-juǎn mid-Qīng medical-doctrinal treatise — the principal work of Zhāng Nán, regarded as one of the most important Dàoguāng / Xián-fēng-era reorganisations of classical Chinese medical theory for practical clinical application. The title’s bànghē 棒喝 (“staff-and-shout”) borrows the Chán Buddhist pedagogical idiom — the master’s sudden percussive strike to dislodge the student’s habituated misconceptions — and applies it to medical education: the work is structured as a series of doctrinal bànghē aimed at correcting standard mid-Qīng physicians’ habitual errors. Zhāng’s principal targets are (a) the over-prescription of warming-tonifying drugs without proper diagnosis of underlying yīn-deficiency; (b) the misuse of Wēnbìng 溫病 classifications by physicians who had not mastered the canonical Shānghán foundation; (c) the careless use of bādòu 巴豆 and fùzǐ 附子 as universal warming agents. The work’s distinctive contribution is its integration of Wēnbìng doctrine (葉桂 Yè Tiānshì and 吳瑭 Wú Tāng) with the classical-formulary jīngfāng tradition in a manner accessible to working clinicians.

Abstract
Zhāng Nán 章楠 (Hǔshān 虎山, 1779–1857), mid-Qīng physician of Shàoxīng / Cíxī (Zhèjiāng), is documented in the standard reference works as one of the principal Dàoguāng / Xián-fēng-era medical authorities of the JiāngZhè region. The catalog meta dates him conventionally as Qīng; the composition window 1825–1850 reflects the documented period of his mature clinical practice and the standard dating of the Yīmén bànghē. The work is significant as one of the most successful mid-Qīng integrations of Wēnbìng and classical-formulary doctrine, written for the working clinician rather than for the scholarly kǎozhèng yīxué circle. It was widely used in late-Qīng medical pedagogy and was incorporated into the standard curriculum of the early-Republican Shàoxīng Medical Society 紹興醫學會 (under 何廉臣 and 曹炳章’s leadership).
