Cáo Bǐngzhāng 曹炳章 ( Chìdiàn 赤電, 1878 – 5 March 1956), Republican-period Chinese physician, bibliophile, and editor; native of Yínxiàn 鄞縣 (i.e. Sìmíng 四明 = modern Níngbō, Zhèjiāng), resident from age fourteen in Shàoxīng 紹興.

Studied pharmacology with his father and clinical medicine under Fāng Xiǎoān 方曉安; began clinical practice in 1902. Co-founded the Shàoxīng Medical Society 紹興醫學會 with 何廉臣 Hé Liánchén in 1908 and was a chief editor of its journal Shàoxīng yī yào xué bào 紹興醫藥學報. Founded the Héjì Pharmacy 和濟藥局 in Shàoxīng in 1913.

From 1935 onward served as chief editor of the great Republican medical anthology Zhōngguó yī xué dà chéng 中國醫學大成 — a 365-title collection of Chinese medical works from the Hàn through the Qīng, comprising over 1,000 fascicles, the largest single Republican-era compilation of Chinese medical literature. In 1952 he donated more than 3,400 volumes from his personal medical library to the state. Author and editor of dozens of monographs, of which the best known are:

  • 辨舌指南 (KR3eb056, 6 juan, preface 1920) — comprehensive tongue-diagnostic compendium synthesising the entire Qīng tradition with early-Republican Western anatomical-physiological framing.
  • Biàn shé xīn biān 辨舌新編 — earlier monograph on tongue diagnosis serialised in the Shàoxīng yī bào.
  • Cáo shì yī yào lùn cóng 曹氏醫藥論叢 — selected medical essays.
