Kèchuāng ǒután 客窗偶談

Casual Conversations at the Guest-Window by 沈明宗 Shěn Míngzōng ( Mùcún 目存, hào Qiūchí 秋池, fl. late seventeenth / early eighteenth century, Kāngxī period).

About the work

A one-juǎn clinical-theoretical miscellany by Shěn Míngzōng — the early-Qīng Jiāxīng 嘉興 (浙江) physician of the LǐZhū 李朱 (Lǐ Dōngyuán / Zhū Dānxī) tradition who also produced the Shānghán Líushū chánjiě 傷寒六書纏解, the Jīnguì yàolüè biānzhù 金匱要略編注 (1692), and the Wēnrè bìng piān 溫熱病篇. The Kèchuāng ǒután is the theoretical-doctrinal companion to Shěn’s classical-text commentary work — preserving his short doctrinal essays on the structure of Chinese medical theory. The work opens with a Confucian student-master dialogue on the inadequacy of the standard shíèr jīngluò / wǔzàngliùfǔ clinical schema and the necessity of integrating it with the tiānrén 天人 yùnqì 五運六氣 cosmological framework — establishing Shěn’s signature integrative-doctrinal position.

Abstract

Shěn Míngzōng 沈明宗 (Mùcún / Qiūchí), early-Qīng Jiāxīng physician, is one of the most theoretically sophisticated physicians of the post-Lǐ Shízhēn / pre-Wú Jūtōng period — combining classical LǐZhū clinical doctrine with the yùnqì cosmological framework and the Shānghán / Jīnguì classical-formulary tradition. His major works are the Shānghán Liùshū chánjiě (a commentary on the ‘six books’ of Shānghán commentary), the Jīnguì yàolüè biānzhù 金匱要略編注 (1692, a major early-Qīng commentary on the Jīnguì), and the present Kèchuāng ǒután miscellany. The composition window 1670–1710 reflects his documented productive period in the Kāngxī era. The work entered Chinese circulation via the late-Qīng / Republican Hǎiwài huíliú zhōngyī gǔjí (hxwd) repatriation programme.

Historiographical significance: Shěn Míngzōng is one of the early-Qīng theorist-physicians between the Míng Lǐ-Zhū-school orthodoxy and the mature Wēnbìng-school of the Qiánlóng — Jiāqìng era. The Kèchuāng ǒután’s integrative doctrinal-cosmological position prefigures the Mèng-hé-school integrative method of the Dàoguāng — Xiánfēng period (cf. KR3eq049). Not in CBDB.
